CS2 gen codes: look at any skin before you buy it
A screenshot of a skin tells you very little. Wear looks different in motion, a pattern lands differently on every seed, and the inspect link is somebody else’s lighting. On a community server running the gen plugin you can hold the thing yourself, for free, before deciding whether it is worth what it costs.
What the command is
Four numbers typed into chat, which spawn a weapon wearing the skin they describe:
!gen 16 309 0.01 0
That is a Factory New M4A4 Howl. It creates nothing real and nothing tradable — the weapon exists on that server, for that round, and nowhere else. It does nothing in matchmaking.
What the four numbers are
Why your float might do nothing
Every skin exists across only part of the 0-to-1 range, and the range differs per skin. The Howl runs 0 to 0.4. Ask for a 0.9 Howl and the command does not give you a battered Howl — there is no such item, so it gives you nothing at all, silently.
This is the commonest reason a gen code “does not work”. If a command produces no weapon and the server definitely runs the plugin, the float is the first thing to check.
The wear names map to the same scale: Factory New below 0.07, Minimal Wear to 0.15, Field-Tested to 0.38, Well-Worn to 0.45, and Battle-Scarred above that.
The other reason: the wrong plugin
A server advertising !ws will usually not answer a gen code. They are different features. !ws is a skin menu — it hands you a chooser over a preset list. !gen builds an arbitrary skin from a paint kit, a float and a seed.
Thousands of servers advertise the first. Almost none advertise the second, and the ones that answer it mostly do not say so in their name, which is why a list of them is worth having: 15 that do, one per map.
Patterns worth knowing
On the few skins where the seed matters, particular seeds have names and prices attached. The AK-47 Case Hardened at seed 661 — the “Scar Pattern” — is the most blue an AK gets and the most valuable pattern in the game. The Karambit Case Hardened at 387 is the equivalent blue gem, and the Karambit Marble Fade at 412 is the Fire and Ice with no yellow at all.
None of those numbers transfer between weapons. Case Hardened is the same paint kit on the AK and the Karambit, but 661 means nothing on the knife and 387 is unremarkable on the rifle.
Making one
The generator picks the skin, bounds the float to what that skin can actually have, and offers the named patterns as one click — so the two mistakes above are hard to make.
